Overall, I think this article talks about. The overall focal point of this review is to talk about Michelle Obama’s memoir, and after reading the article it doesn't focus too much on that, and doesnt even talk about Michelle Obama’s life for the majority of it. It was very jumpy in terms of what it was talking about, one second it was referring to feminism and the Civil Rights movement, and the next she was talking about how much she loves Barack Obama’s two books. This doesn't make sense, considering the review is supposed to be talking about her memoir, so it would make more sense if she was talking more about Michelle Obama’s personal life instead of American standards. Another reason I believe Afua didn't write a good review, is because the majority of the article is spent talking about her position as a “First Lady”, giving quotes from new channels and politicians, when it could have been taking quotes directly from her memoir. This goes to show that the review did not focus on the main point, which is informing the audience about the memoir, and instead just talked more about her position as a first lady.
More reasons I believe this review does not focus on the actual memoir itself, is because she over complicates the overall summary, and speaks more into American history rather than Michelle Obama herself. Since a lot of the article focused on segregation, feminism, and the civil rights movement, it makes it unreadable for someone who isn't too educated and may not know what they're talking about. The target reader for a review on a memoir should be for anyone who wants to read the review and who has read the memoir. Michelle Obama’s book “Becoming”, is said to be “Adapted for Young Readers”, according to common sense media. So it does not make sense that the review should be unsuitable for young readers as well, considering anyone who read the book should be able to read the review as well. A lot of the article was also spent talking about political views in the memoir, yet all the opinions stated may have been biased towards Michelle Obama. The political views are also a lot more complicated, like as the article states, “Or the time Fox host Bill O’Reilly said: “I don’t want to go on a lynching party against Michelle Obama unless there is evidence.””. This doesn't stick to the theme of talking about the memoir itself, it goes on to make it personal against Michelle Obama making it a biased opinion.
