Mr. Belfort went from penny stocks to penthouse suits in under 4 years via evil marketing and economic schemes that would cause thousands of innocent people to go bankrupt. Jordan's journey to riches had many highs and lows; typically, the consequences were a result of his drug abuse problems.
Release Date: December 25th, 2013
Jordan Belfort was a stock broker in New York who had lost his job after the 1987 stock market crash, also known as Black Monday. Desperate to support his wife, he turned to the newspaper's job advertisements. This is where he discovered Stratton Oakmont, a company that sells and advertises penny stocks to random civilians in hopes of making money from them. Jordan had made over $2 billion by scamming these innocent civilians via pump-and-dump scams, according to the story's morals. This would eventually lead Mr. Belfort to go to prison for money laundering. Jordan's business endeavors made him heavily addicted to a variety of drugs, and they became a part of his everyday life. As he stated in the movie:
Roger Ebert's review of Wolf of Wall Street describes it as an intriguing movie, claiming that it is a "reptilian brain movie." People consider Robert Ebert to be an expert in the field. People who watch this film claim that it's great because of the social aspects of relationships, money, greed, and drugs. It can also simply be about the extravagant lifestyle Mr. Belfort lived. The main reason I believe this is a perfectly written movie is that it informs the viewers on how drug abuse can affect their health, relationships, and overall lifestyle. Jordan states multiple times throughout the movie that he takes drugs in all his everyday situations, like business meetings, quality time with his wife and kids, parties, and more. As the real Jordan Belfort states in an interview with Paparazzi:
Jordan Belfort’s drug addiction almost caused the deaths of his wife, best friend, and kids in multiple different scenarios. However, the scenario I’m going to touch on is how he decided to take his yacht out in the middle of a thunderstorm to go to Monaco while on a ton of different drugs. The yacht ended up sinking, nearly killing everyone on board, and after that moment, his wife decided to leave him. This caused Jordan to start abusing his wife and kids, which he did solely because of his drug addiction. This movie is filled with so many crazy scenarios and is action-packed with a variety of different highs and lows.
The idea of a man doing all these different drugs, making billions of dollars, partying with attractive women, and living this crazy lifestyle is exactly what draws people's eyes and love towards the movie. Simultaneously, the movie educates viewers about the grave dangers and consequences associated with drug addiction. Drug abuse can easily ruin your life, especially if you are rich, because then you are able to afford all the drugs you want. Another aspect that plays into the message behind this movie and why everyone loves it is that it teaches you the lesson that money doesn't buy happiness. Mr. Belfort had all the money he could ever ask for, yet at the end of the day, he still wasn’t happy with what he had. His greed for more money consumed his mind, which never allowed him to be truly happy. Jordan has talked about how he was depressed when he was at his peak financially, and the only thing that brought him joy was drugs, parties, and sex. The secret, hidden message behind this movie resonates with me every day, and it is important for everyone to learn and understand. There isn't much more I can say about the novel without spoiling certain aspects of it, but the big party lifestyle, as well as the drugs and money involved, lead to a series of crazy events that will leave you with a mix of a variety of different emotions simultaneously.
The movie Wolf of Wall Street has a variety of different popular actors and actresses, starting with the main character Leonardo Dicaprio, who is playing the man himself Jordan Belfort. I believe that Leonardo fit this role perfectly and portrayed Mr. Belfort in the most perfect way possible. Then we have his best friend Donnie Azoff, also known as Jonah Hill. He ends up marrying his beautiful wife Naomi Lapaglia, but you may know her as Margot Robbie. And the last main character being Brad Bodnick, who is played by Jon Bernthal and is also Jordan’s best friend. There are still many other main characters, however the 4 I listed are the predominant characters of the show. In terms of the budget used for the production of the movie, a surprising $100 million dollars was used, and it produced a total revenue of $400 million dollars. In the point of view of movie production this was an amazing movie for the budget they had.
A famous stockbroker who has also made billions of dollars similar to Mr. Belfort is Warren Buffet. The difference is, Buffet is wise about how he spent his money and wasn’t into the partying and drugs lifestyle. A popular quote by Mr. Buffet states:
This quote really goes to show how Mr. Buffet knew what he was doing as a stockbroker and how to balance money throughout his life, yet the immature Jordan Belfort was the complete opposite and ended up ruining his life with money.
I would say that this movie should be on your “must watch” or “bucket list” because of how intriguing and exciting it is, as well as the secret hidden message that will resonate with you after watching. Watching movies that are based on a true story is always beneficial to you, as it evokes raw emotions because you know everything you are seeing in the film is somewhat true and has actually happened. The majority of online reviews about this movie recommend you watch it for the same reasons I stated in this review, so make the time to watch it as soon as you possibly can! Movies based on real events educate you on common issues that happen every day in our world; you just may not be aware of them yet, and that is exactly why I would recommend that you watch Wolf of Wall Street.
